• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Prime Chuck -- No Pictures : I support the idea behind this book of telling the stories of the innocent young lives snuffed out by this monster. It’s much like learning the back stories of the victims of 9/11 or the Titanic, as it adds a depth of feeling not otherwise possible. To truly appreciate the horror and tragedy requires getting to know the victims as living breathing persons instead of just statistics or a roster of names. But I was extremely disappointed that this book contains no pictures. I was expecting at the very least to see the standard face shots that usually appear on various websites that discuss this tragedy. My hope was that if the author was interviewing family and friends of the victims that he might obtain additional previously unpublished photos of the victims living their lives in happier times to help flesh out their stories. It means so much more when you can associate a face with a textual account. It’s annoying to have to search the web looking for photos each time a victim’s name appears. This book is interesting but it would have been so much better with photos. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021 )
• 3.0 out of 5 stars from WONH -- Not a single photograph : The book is quite detailed however it could be so much better with photos of not only the victims but locations and landmarks often talked about and identified in the book. Strangely missing is any family members from the Piest family or from Kim Byers regarding the film receipt that is now a subject of possible police tampering. The reader is always better off with the corresponding photos of locations and victims as the author weaves his narrative. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jeff Fleischer -- Moving, incredibly researched, and puts the focus on the victims : This incredibly researched book is the rare work that focuses on the victims instead of the killer - and, more importantly, who they were and what their lives were like, rather than just their deaths. It's a beautifully written, engaging and sad chronicle of young men lost too soon, and of Uptown Chicago in the 1970s. Highly recommended for any reader, not just true-crime fans. Not so with this excellent, moving book, which makes sure to put the victims of Gacy in the forefront.
